1997 PRICING PERFORMANCE OF MARKET ADVISORY SERVICES FOR CORN AND SOYBEANS AgEcon
Jackson, Thomas E.; Irwin, Scott H.; Good, Darrel L..
The purpose of this research report is to present an evaluation of advisory service pricing performance in 1997 for corn and soybeans. Specifically, the average price received by a subscriber to an advisory service is calculated for corn and soybean crops harvested in 1997. The average net advisory price across all 23 corn programs is $2.32 per bushel. The net advisory prices for corn range from a minimum of $2.00 per bushel to a maximum of $2.74 per bushel. The average net advisory price across all 21 soybean programs is $6.40 per bushel. The net advisory prices for soybeans range from a minimum of $6.08 per bushel to a maximum of $6.99 per bushel.

An Exploration of Factors Influencing Ethical and Unethical Behavior in Negotiations AgEcon
Perry, Gregory M.; Duffy, Patricia A.; Nixon, Clair J.; Robison, Lindon J..
The issue of ethics has received little notice in agricultural economics journals. This study utilized a survey technique to reveal the ethical attitudes among some 500 students at four Land Grant Universities. The data were analyzed using multiple regression techniques. Individuals negotiating with strangers were more willing to use questionable ethical tactics. Women, individuals who were cooperative rather than competitive in negotiation situations, and those who regularly attended religious services wer consistantly less willing to use questionable ethics in negotiation. The size of the individual's hometown and family income had no clear impact on ethical attidutes in regotiations.

DEVELOPMENT OF A MARKET BENCHMARK PRICE FOR AGMAS PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONS AgEcon
Good, Darrel L.; Irwin, Scott H.; Jackson, Thomas E..
The purpose of this research report is to identify the appropriate market benchmark price to use to evaluate the pricing performance of market advisory services that are included in the annual AgMAS pricing performance evaluations. Five desirable properties of market benchmark prices are identified. Three potential specifications of the market benchmark price are considered: the average price received by Illinois farmers, the harvest cash price, and the average cash price over a two-year crop marketing window. The average cash price meets all of the desired properties, except that it would not be easily implementable by producers. It can be shown, though, that the price realized via a more manageable strategy of "spreading" sales during the marketing...

Do Ideas Matter in Strategic Choices Made by Organizations? An Empirical Work on the Participation of Agricultural Organizations to the Political Making Process in Costa Rica AgEcon
D'Hotel, Elodie Maitre; le Cotty, Tristan.
The new institutional economics has recently developed the idea that the institutional environment can have an impact on economic actors' mental perceptions, and reciprocally, that these perceptions can impact on the institutional environment. This latter point seems particularly relevant in the field of economic organisations participation in the political making process. Nevertheless the empirical description of this role of mental perceptions in the political behaviour had not been made clearly. To contribute to this empirical description we lead a comparative study of 4 farm sectors in Costa Rica, based on a dynamic approach of mental perceptions in relation with the institutional change occurring during the liberalisation process. We carry out a...

Evaluation of social capital promotion in rural development programmes: a methodological approach AgEcon
Pisani, Elena; Franceschetti, Giorgio.
The academic literature makes evident that the main immaterial contribution of the LEADER approach (LA) consists in the promotion of social capital in rural areas. Therefore the insertion of LA in the framework of Rural Development Programmes (RDPs) should be considered as a powerful opportunity to promote rural development initiatives by means of a bottom-up methodology, much more focused on social relationships among local actors. These aspects open new opportunities also in terms of evaluations of RDPs and of LA, in the context of the already established Common Monitoring and Evaluation Framework (CMEF). The objective of this paper is to present a methodology for the definition of the Relative Index of Social Capital Promotion (RISCP) to be used in the...

Programming Regional Rural Development for Poland: A Research Perspective AgEcon
Ziolkowska, Jadwiga.
Since Mai 2004 Poland is a new EU member country and has, due to the short membership period, little experience in creating rural policy according to the EU regulations. Additionally, there is a centralised planning of rural policies. The aim of the poster is to present how financing of rural policy can be improved by means of scientific programming methods. The study shows how the modelling approach can be used to analyse the optimal budget allocation for the Polish Plan for Development of Rural Areas from a regional perspective to better reach defined objectives.
